still life with quilts
In Still Life with Quilts In Still Life with Quilts, I paint the quilts I’ve made, the vessels I treasure, and the birds and botanicals that ground me. These works honour women’s craft and the quiet beauty of everyday objects.
Still Life with Quilts celebrates the handmade, the domestic, and the deeply personal. Each quilt depicted in the series is stitched by me, honouring the generations of women makers in my family and the long tradition of quilt‑making. The vessels throughout the series are treasured objects from my home—pieces I’ve collected over time or that have been passed down—each carrying its own history of use, memory, and meaning.
Birds and botanicals recur as carriers of colour, movement, and connection to nature. The birds bear witness as they perch within these intimate, handmade worlds, suggesting presence, memory, and companionship.
Historically dismissed as domestic craft, quilting was undervalued as “women’s work” despite being deeply creative, resourceful, and community‑building—an art form born from necessity, thrifting, recycling, and storytelling. Similarly, still life painting has long been considered the “lowest” genre in art history, making it an ideal form through which to explore how women’s creative labour has been relegated.
These works invite an appreciation for objects that hold memory, for the beauty of the everyday, and for the value of handcrafted heirlooms. They offer a sense of grounding, connection, and continuity: art that feels meaningful and emotionally resonant.
