Hot pink and orange dahlias from a local grower burst from a blue glug jug against a dramatic navy background — bold, abundant, and unashamedly joyful.
The glug jug is a beloved object with a history as charming as its shape. First made in Staffordshire in the 1870s, these fish-shaped ceramic jugs are named for the irresistible glugging sound they make when poured — a sound so delightful that a pair were gifted to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1958. Part collectible, part everyday companion, a glug jug on the table has a way of making people smile.
Beneath it, a denim quilt folds and pools in soft, worn tones, its surface scattered with eight-point stars in sage, gold, and blush — that ancient symbol of wisdom and the four stages of life, here rendered in the most domestic of forms. And tucked into the folds, almost easy to miss, an Australian Flame Robin sits and watches. Still, patient, perfectly at home.
This is a large work in oil on stretched canvas, sold unframed and ready to hang.
